Response to arguments of Director, Australian War Memorial, as published in The Strategist recently. There are holes in Dr Nelson’s argument in relation to space limitations, funding constraints, and the extent to which the Memorial can provide a ‘therapeutic milieu’ for veterans. The Memorial only tells half the story of Australia’s wars – how well we fight but not why and whether it was worth it. The Memorial has narrowed its focus to give a parochial view of wars Australia has been involved in. Dr Nelson draws heavily on emotive vignettes to make his case.
