ANU historian Joan Beaumont says that, with the passage of time Anzac Day grief may have been replaced by a ‘much more sentimental nostalgia about the past’. Anzac has found resonance in different ways, becoming instead a ‘civilian myth’ with Anzac values being applied to people like police officers, firefighters, victims of terrorist attacks, people who serve the community, even footballers.
