Australian historian, Ann Moyal, knew Winston Churchill in his later life. Here she reflects on the letters Churchill wrote in 1915-16 to his wife, Clementine, and juxtaposes the self-absorbed tone of the letters with concurrent events on the Dardanelles Peninsula, where Empire troops were being evacuated from the venture that Churchill had assiduously promoted as First Lord of the Admiralty.
