Ann-Mari Jordens

Alien to Citizen: Settling Migrants in Australia, 1945-75, Allen & Unwin, St Leonards, NSW, 1997

Administrative history describing the profound changes in Australia’s demography after World War II. Strong on the role of the Immigration Department and its officers at home and overseas and of the resettlement arrangements for new arrivals. It is notable that not until the Whitlam Government (1972-75) did the certificate of Australian citizenship, the symbol of a migrant’s acceptance in the new country, include the Australian coat of arms, rather than a picture of the Queen, and omit all references to the new citizen being a British subject.
