The Hume Leader reports Honest History’s opinion that there is no evidence that Ataturk ever said the ‘Johnnies and Mehmets’ words attributed to him. Hume City Council plans to include the words on a memorial to be built in Broadmeadows.
A Turkish community spokesperson, Samet Istar, responded in defence of the plan and the Hume chief executive officer, Domenic Isola, is also quoted that the words provide great comfort to many people. Honest History’s statements on the issue have always conceded that the words offer comfort. There is more on this issue here.
