Socialism is not the answer, as it tends towards totalitarianism, but the ills of neoliberal capitalism still need tackling. These include boom-bust, inequality, underemployment, climate change, and declining wages compared with profits. The author looks at models of civilised capitalism, as advocated by Stiglitz, Reich and others and summarises a new approach.
