Origin of a particular myth of bronzed Australian bushmen, rural labourers of the 19th century, claimed by Ward and others to epitomise Australia, or at least Australian males.Long debated, pro and con. The fiftieth anniversary of the book’s publication generated much analysis: here; here; here; here; here. Some observers have seen Ward’s bushman as the forerunner of the Anzac while others have differentiated them; they are both myths.
