‘State Library makes public up to 70,000 never-seen photos of Melbourne and country Victoria‘, ABC News, 18 November 2015
The SLV has begun digitising rolls of film taken of streets, houses and other buildings in Melbourne and rural centres in the 1970s. There are up to 800 photographs per Melbourne suburb.
“In cultural terms I think they’re priceless because they capture a period in time across a breadth of suburbs and breadth of townships in the regional areas”, community engagement director at the library Peter McMahon said.
Photos of Fitzroy are available online now and Castlemaine will follow soon. The complete digitisation will take years.
