Indigenous war service: two exhibitions at the National Archives of Australia’, Honest History, 2 May 2017

A review of two exhibitions, Indigenous Australians at War from the Boer War to the Present (touring from the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne) and Facing Two Fronts: the Fight for Respect, also focusing on Indigenous uniformed service. The article also includes a summary of recent efforts by national cultural institutions to chronicle the many aspects of a nation at war, including Indigenous service. It can be read in conjunction with our recent review of the For Country, for Nation exhibition at the Australian War Memorial.

Michael Piggott is Treasurer of the Honest History association and an archivist of many years’ experience. He has a chapter in The Honest History Book. The chapter is about the Australian War Memorial and the legacy of Charles Bean.
