McKenna, Mark: Reconciled republic?

McKenna, Mark

This Country: A Reconciled Republic? UNSW Press, Sydney, 2004

The author considers together what he sees as two key and related issues, reconciliation with Indigenous Australians and the republic.

Reconciliation and the republic are not separate issues, they are connected intimately to one another. The first platform of an Australian republic, regardless of how our head of state is elected, should be reconciliation with Aboriginal peeple. And by “reconciliation” I mean first and foremost constitutional recognition of Aboriginal people and their right to freedom from racial discrimination. (p. 16)
