‘The nine race riots that made Australia – for better and worse‘, The Conversation, 9 January 2015
Spin-off from Peter FitzSimons’s television program, The Great Australian Race Riot, on SBS-TV. The author, a consultant to the program, suggests its themes are ‘righteous vengeance against the outsider’, misalignments of power combined with social inequalities, ‘racialised ideologies of superiority’ and ‘the affirmation of social bigotry as an Australian social value’, people standing up against repressive authority and, through it all, the hope of something better. FitzSimons talks about the program to News and Fairfax. More on the program.
