Dowse, Sara: What are feminists to do?

Dowse, Sara

So what are feminists to do?Inside Story, 14 August 2014

Text of 2014 Emily’s List Oration. The author was head of the federal government’s Office for the Status of Women in the 1970s.

The 1970s could be characterised as a decade when feminists (though we didn’t, to begin with, call ourselves that) crept into just about every institution you can think of, with the express intention of turning it inside out.

The lecture covers the struggles of feminists to make headway in 1970s bureaucracy, makes some judgements about changes that have occurred (or not occurred) since, assesses reasons for attitudes to prime minister Julia Gillard and concludes with some suggestions as to next steps.
