Last night the prime minister told Leigh Sales on 7.30 that Australia had a ‘strong, egalitarian, fair-go culture’ and that whatever was done with tax reform had to fit with that culture. Honest History has been collecting material for more than twelve months about how Australia is becoming more and more unequal. (So are other developed countries.) Even our incomplete collection links to more than a dozen reports over that time that describe the growing gaps in Australian incomes, wealth and opportunity. Inequality needs to be looked at historically, so we can see how things have changed and so we can see how far our cherished ideals lag behind our current reality.
