Australia 1942: In the Shadow of War, Cambridge University Press, Port Melbourne, Vic., 2013
A collection of essays on a momentous year in Australia’s history. The authors include David Horner, Kate Darian-Smith, Ross McMullin, Alan Powell and the Japanese academic, Hiroyuki Shindo. The chapters cover the history of Australia-Japan relations, the home front, the Curtin Government’s response to the threat, Japanese intentions and aspects of military operations. There is a florid foreword from Kim Beazley.
The article from Alan Powell is interesting for its description of the commercialised commemoration of the Darwin raids; there is a comment here. There is a review here and the editor talks about the book here. Companion volume on 1943.
