Daley, Paul: Black diggers

Daley, Paul

Black diggers: challenging Anzac myths‘, Guardian Australia, 14 January 2014

Looks at the stories of black servicemen during World War I, in the context of a new play ‘Black Diggers’. About 400 Indigenous Australians joined up. Notes that the experiences of black soldiers mirrored those of white soldiers and that their deeds have been mythologised in the Indigenous community just as those of white soldiers have. Also observes that recruiters became ‘colour blind’ as numbers of white recruits declined during the war. Equal treatment did not continue after the war. The production is discussed here.
