Dear Reader: you might have wondered how the War Memorial grew those wings as shown in our picture below. The strange effect was predicted years ago by experts – we’ve checked – and known to the Minister who signed the paper (or would have been had she read the documentation).
More. The then Minister’s own department said in that documentation that ‘[t]he construction of the Glazed Link will … have a semi-permanent, high intensity impact on the Memorial’s “visual isolation in the landscape”’.
Heritage consultant Geoff Ashley said ‘it is the huge glazed addition and the resulting loss of the free-standing form of the Memorial and its function as a national shrine, that will most damage its National Heritage values’. A legacy indeed for former Memorial Council Chair Kerry Stokes and former Memorial Director Brendan Nelson.
