Albany
Albany WA is the setting for something called ‘Convoy Campout’ on 24-25 April. It promises camping out under the stars, a range of Anzac-themed events and, from the money raised, a ‘contribution’ to the War Widows Guild. We are not told how large the contribution will be – a widows’ mite perhaps – and the whole thing has a similar vibe to the ill-fated Camp Gallipoli. But, as we said of Camp Gallipoli, if this is the sort of thing you like, then you will like this sort of thing.
Canberra
The Australian Centre for the Study of Armed Conflict and Society at UNSW Canberra is running a symposium on 8 May on the topic ‘Why Australia went to the Great War’. Presenters are Greg Lockhart, John Mordike, Douglas Newton, John Moses, Gerhard Fischer. More on this flyer here.
Reims
There is on 22-24 June a weekend in Reims, France, dedicated to remembrance, peace and reconciliation. Details are here and note that you’ll need to book before 30 April. By the end of the Great War in 1918, 10 000 shells and combat in the trenches nearby, 80 per cent of Reims had been destroyed. The people of Reims have not forgotten
