In Senate Estimates yesterday, Senator Kitching (ALP, Vic) mentioned Dr Chau Chak Wing, who may or may not have been ASIO head Mike Burgess’s ‘puppeteer’ of recent alleged attempts to manipulate Australian elections. (Mr Burgess was sayin’ nuffin to the Senator.) Among his philanthropic activities, Dr Chau has been a donor to the Australian War Memorial ($560 000 in the years 2015-18) and is one of the very exclusive group of Fellows of the Memorial.

Dr Chau was something of a special subject of Honest History for a few years and we provide links to our round-ups of material on him: here, here and here. ASIO mentioned him in 2015 as a person of interest and Andrew Hastie MP gave him another run in 2018.

Dr Chau is known as Zhou Zerong in the dialect of North China. His doctorate is an honorary one from Keuka College in upstate New Yor. He has been of interest to Australian media since at least 2009.

We hasten to add that Dr Chau is an Australian citizen and has not been found guilty of any crime. He has denied he is the puppeteer.
