Yesterday was Holocaust Memorial Day. Not many Australians know that the Australian War Memorial has had since 2016 a permanent exhibition* commemorating the Holocaust, with particular emphasis on that horrific event’s Australian survivors. It was to the great credit of the then Director of the Memorial, Brendan Nelson, that he pushed for the Holocaust: Witnesses and Survivors exhibition against considerable resistance from Memorial traditionalists.
Here is a link to Peter Stanley’s review of the Holocaust exhibition. It includes a further link to a 2019 speech by Dr Nelson and one to a 2020 speech by then Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, opening an expansion of the exhibition.

*There had been a temporary exhibition in the early 1990s then a small section in the Second World War galleries. This is covered in Peter Stanley’s post.
