Farrell, Frank: International Socialism and Australian Labour

Frank Farrell

International Socialism and Australian Labour: The Left in Australia, 1919-1939, Hale & Iremonger, Sydney, 1981

Discusses the impact of Leninism, international trade unionism, socialism and communism. Considers the attitudes of the Labour movement to World War I and later the impending World War II. Describes anti-Bolshevik riots by ex-soldiers and others in 1919 and 1921. ‘The ravages of war’, notes the author, ‘produced considerable changes in Australia’s demography, economy, social structure, and – perhaps most spectacularly – in political life. The Anzac myth and the touchy digger were powerful right-wing influences in politics from this time on.’ A 1982 review by Stuart Macintyre is here.
