The author takes a tour d’horizon of the world of 1914-15 with sallies forward to the world of today. He touches on imperialism, revolution, jingoism, grief, war powers, militarism, commemoration, latrines, extremes, Europe in 1914, Gallipoli in 1915, derring-do, John Buchan, Roger Casement, boy conscription, saluting the flag, the First Duke of Marlborough, Winston Churchill, and the Womens’ International League for Peace and Freedom. There are also some personal reminiscences.

The author, a Tasmanian-born historian, was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide, 2011-14.
