The Secrets of the Anzacs: the Untold Story of Venereal Disease in the Australian Army, 1914-1919, Scribe, Brunswick, Vic., 2014

During World War I, about 60 000 soldiers of the Australian Imperial Force were treated for venereal diseases, almost the same number of men who were killed during the war. At first there was denial and cover-up, strict punishments and return home. Some men, ‘cured’, re-enlisted under changed names. Eventually, prophylaxis and education became widespread.

The book is reviewed for Honest History by Diane Bell. There is a recent article on the ‘Wazzer riot’ here.
