Daley, Paul: Narcha’s remains have been repatriated. But colonialism’s malevolence lingers

Narcha’s remains have been repatriated. But colonialism’s malevolence lingers‘, Guardian Australia, 3 April 2017

Douglas Grant is perhaps Australia’s best known Indigenous Anzac. The remains of one of Grant’s close relatives – Ngadjon elder Narcha, also known as Barry Clarke – have been repatriated from Berlin’s Museum of Ethnology. Narcha, an elder who had numerous wives and many children, was either Grant’s natural father or uncle.

There is more about Narcha (Barry Clarke) and Douglas Grant in Paul Daley’s chapter in The Honest History Book. The chapter is called ‘Our most important war: The legacy of frontier conflict’. See also this on the ABC and this from Aaron Pegram of the War Memorial.

Update 27 February 2018: Paul Daley on when Douglas Grant met Henry Lawson.

Update 9 June 2019: A bust of Douglas Grant is discovered.
