Daley, Paul: Decolonising the dictionary: reclaiming Australian history for the forgotten

Paul Daley

Decolonising the dictionary: reclaiming Australian history for the forgotten‘, Guardian Australia, 17 February 2019 updated

Long article pointing to the deficiencies in the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB, located at the Australian National University), especially its earlier volumes (underrepresentation of women and Indigenous Australians, selectivity of evidence). Looks then at the current efforts to ‘decolonise’ the ADB, and notes how these are hampered by lack of funds, by contrast with the forthcoming lavish expenditure on the Australian War Memorial.

The links to this piece include articles describing similar efforts with the UK national biographical dictionary. An earlier article by Daley touches on the subject also.

Update 8 March 2019: Inside Story/Canberra Times/ADB supplement for International Women’s Day: Recovered Lives: Twenty-eight Australian Women who Disappeared from History.
