‘Who owns Gallipoli? Australia’s Gallipoli anxieties 1915-2005’, Journal of Australian Studies, 88, 2006, pp. 1-12
Since the Australian departure from Gallipoli in December 1915, there has been an ambivalent relationship with the Turkish authorities regarding care of ground seen by some Australians as part of Australia or sacred ground. This came to a head with Turkish roadworks in the area in 2005. The article also reports conflicting views on whether the behaviour of Australians, particularly younger Australians, at Gallipoli in 2005 was appropriate to the occasion.
