‘Australia’s Anzac Day – the gap between official rhetoric and popular sentiments‘, World Socialist Web Site, 26 April 2014
Describes Anzac Day as traditionally ‘an official occasion for the promotion of militarism’. This year there has been more government propaganda associated with the Anzac centenary, as well as greater prominence for the veterans of recent ‘imperialist interventions’ in Iraq and Afghanistan and ‘conditioning of Australian workers and youth’ for future conflicts. However, interviews with those watching suggested they tended to be anti-war and were attending the march for family reasons.
