Analyses questions of definition around our migrant intake, particularly over the difference between permanent and temporary migrants. There are other complications as well, mainly to do with the special status of New Zealanders, not to mention the need to take account of people who leave Australia.
The article looks at how the Australian Bureau of Statistics does the sums; it comes up with some bottom lines. The authors conclude we could take more refugees.
