More Aboriginal MPs shouldn’t let the major parties off the hook‘, New Matilda, 5 July 2016

Darumbul journalist, Amy McQuire, notes the election of Wiradjuri woman, Linda Burney, ALP, as the first Indigenous woman in the House of Representatives. But the real test has to be in the policies that are developed. ‘The election of Linda Burney is welcome’, says McQuire, ‘but the real celebrations can only begin when Labor and the Coalition make significant changes to their Indigenous Affairs policies. Until there is support for a strong and independent First Nations representative body, that’s unlikely to happen …’

Meanwhile, other reports noted that one-fifth of Indigenous births in Western Australia were not registered (also here) and that Indigenous women are many times more likely to experience domestic violence than women on average.
