A review (no longer accessible Dec 2014) suggested the editors ‘evidently asked their contributors to adopt a democratic, or rather egalitarian, approach, to put some emphasis on Aboriginal questions as well as on multiculturalism, plus to acknowledge the fact that Australia is more than just Sydney and Melbourne’. The contributions are strong accordingly on northern and western Australia, aboriginals and national symbols and there is a piece by Bruce Scates and Melanie Oppenheimer on what Australians have written about war.
