Lord, John: Comics in Australia

Lord, John

The history of comics in Australia‘, Australian Independent Media Network, 29 August 2014

Brief article covering early comic strips in The Bulletin and elsewhere, imported comics and the first Australian produced comic in 1931. They provided artists like Norman Lindsay and Phil May with work and a few, notably Ginger Meggs, became national institutions.

Comic books and comic strips as they became more popular covered a multitude of topics including science fiction, adventure, crime, western cowboys, horror and politics. Race, romance and sex were not taboo and the more upright members of society considered some publications to be seducing the innocent.

Television hit comics hard, but some survive. Comics may have been an influence on our cartoonists, who are of high quality.
