Keneally, Thomas: Australians: Flappers to Vietnam

Keneally, Thomas

Australians: Flappers to Vietnam, Allen & Unwin, Crows Nest, NSW, 2014

This is the third volume in the novelist-historian’s take on Australia. Volume 1; volume 2. It looks at behavioural change, consumerism and nascent left and right wing extremism after the Great War, before touching on the Great Depression and exploring the move towards another war. With the new war, there were visiting Americans and there was fear of the Japanese. After the war, there was full employment, suburban spread and fear of nuclear war, then Asian trade, immigration and the Vietnam War.

David Stephens reviews Flappers to Vietnam for Honest History. Honest History supporter, Frank Bongiorno, did a review in The Australian. So did Digby Hildreth for Verandah Magazine. The author talks about his book. And again. And to the ABC’s Mark Colvin. The author also spoke about his book and history at the Sydney launch of Honest History.
