Daley, Paul: aboriginal activist AM Fernando in London

Daley, Paul

Anthony Martin Fernando: the Aboriginal activist who took his people’s fight to London‘, Guardian Australia, 3 July 2015

[Fernando] is probably the first Indigenous Australian to dedicate his life to activism in Europe … His attempt to petition the pope and his decision to protest against the treatment of Australian indigenes at the empire’s very epicenter, his repeated arrests and his willingness to work as a manservant, welder, toymaker and jeweller to support his advocacy, certainly render him one of the most committed and enigmatic.

Despite a biography by Fiona Paisley and a collection of notebooks at AIATSIS, no photographs of Fernando have yet been found.

The article marks NAIDOC week, commencing 5 July. Also in the Guardian for NAIDOC week is this rap by Briggs, referencing many Indigenous Australians. NAIDOC week events.
