Hawke and Nelson support the role of Anzac as nation-defining. The increased interest in Anzac Day, particularly among the young, is noted. Clare Wright argues, on the other hand, that Anzac Day has become ‘monolithic’, blocking out other parts of our history, and ‘risks becoming just a political sideshow’. The day actually symbolises ‘an incredibly difficult time in Australia’s history’.
