The income divide in Australia: the return of class-based politics?‘, Australian Independent Media Network, 19 May 2016

Gets beyond the politics of campaigning to look at some statistics – some of which have been used previously in the posts under our Inequality thumbnail – and put some points in perspective. The author believes there are informal protocols in Australian politics which preclude the discussion of increasing inequality, even while government policies are contributing to that inequality. There is a fall-back on ‘trickle-down economics’, under which wealth accruing to the privileged gradually permeates to the rest of society. The article includes graphs on wages growth, the class divide and party identification.
