Food is central to experiences of war [the author says], and not just for the soldiers for whom it is a daily preoccupation. On the home front, too, food gains heightened emotional, social and political meaning.

Maternal care was expressed through Anzac biscuits sent to the front and Anzac buffets for returning soldiers. German food had different connotations during the Great War, however, and there were rumours of Jewish food distribution machinations. After the Great War there was food aid to devastated Europe.
